S.T.A.R.S.

S.T.A.R.S. Overview and Syllabus

S.T.A.R.S. is an acronym for Skills, Training, Attitude & Readiness for Success. The purpose of this program is to provide participants with the skills needed to help them choose a career and hopefully ready themselves to enter that field. Our intention is to provide information on a variety of topics, encompassing many behaviors found in successful adults. Work is a very important part of daily life, but it is one small part of the whole. This program intends to speak to many areas of a student's life, thereby increasing the likelihood of job success.

The S.T.A.R.S. Certification Program will be offered one time per month, and last 10 days, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Seven core subjects will be covered every other day for two hours each. These seven modules are: Lifeskills, Decision Making, Budgeting, Resume, Interviewing, Job Search, and Retention. Additional elective modules will be offered in week two, in order to meet the needs of the individual student. The elective modules include: Computer Training, Career Exploration, Back to School, Individual Job Search, Parenting, Stretching Your Food Dollar, and Supportive Services. The electives will be taught by S.T.A.R.S. instructors, OSU Extension, and other FCJFS employees.

Participants are asked to report to class early, so that we may begin on time. Rules will be established by the instructors and participants together during the first day. Breaks will be scheduled throughout the day as needed. In order to receive a S.T.A.R.S. Certificate of Completion, each student must report for class each day, or provide good cause and arrange to make-up for the time missed. Those who miss a day in the middle of the program will be required to stop the program at that time, and begin another assignment (if required) until he/she can begin S.T.A.R.S. again in the next month. It is not until a student completes all modules that he or she would receive a certificate.

At the conclusion of the program, students who successfully complete all modules will receive a S.T.A.R.S. certificate. Students who complete the program will have a "stamp of approval" from FCJFS. The S.T.A.R.S. Instructors will work with FCJFS Job Developers to help those "graduates" of the program to find jobs. To the graduate this will mean more intensive job search assistance, possibly to include recommendations from S.T.A.R.S. Instructors.
